Without the header, your account’s pinned version is used. Every response, errors included, echoes the version it was answered with. An unknown version is api_version_invalid.

Within a version, changes are additive only: new endpoints, new optional fields, new error codes, new enum values on fields documented as open. Error codes are never renamed. A change that could break a careful client gets a new dated version.

The SDKs pin the version they were built for. API versions lists every version and what changed.
